Food As Medicine James Gordon, MD

James Gordon, MD, Founder and Director, Center for Mind-Body Medicine 2500 years ago Hippocrates said, “Let food be your medicine, and medicine your food.” His injunction has largely been ignored by his heirs in Western scientific medicine. For 100 years it has been widely assumed that the population of developed countries is adequately nourished. Medical school graduates have little or no understanding of the potential therapeutic and preventive benefits of nutrition. This talk will highlight the fundamental importance of good nutrition and mindful eating in health and illness and the current renaissance in the field of nutritional medicine. The gross inadequacies of the American diet, the pivotal role that poor nutrition plays in chronic illness, some of the most striking benefits of nutritional therapies and the crucial importance of food selection, preparation and enjoyment will all be touched on. The talk will conclude with a description of the ways The Center for Mind-Body Medicine and its Food As Medicine faculty are working to make nutrition central to the curriculum of medical students, the care of patients and the education of children.
