Higher Education in Evolution of Inclusion Steven Tierney

The laws and educational policies at the federal, state and local levels continue to evolve in the areas of non-discrimination and equal access to education. Colleges and Universities must remain current and be creative about how they meet their obligations. That is just the beginning for many of us. It is on the campuses of our county that innovative thinking and programming has helped to change America’s relationship to inclusion, equal opportunity and the development of inclusive communities. This talk will celebrate the role colleges and universities have played. It will also be a call to action, suggesting ways that we can continue to provide the country with moral and intellectual leadership. Steven Tierney is the program director of CIIS’s new graduate counseling psychology concentration in Community Mental Health. He has an M.A. in Counseling and Social Psychology from Wayne State University and an Ed.D .in Education, Leadership, and Supervision from Northeastern University. He has also done post-graduate work in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. Steven has worked in community-based organizations in Boston and San Francisco for three decades, creating and providing innovative mental health and medical service models for adolescents and transition-aged youth. He has been the principal investigator on several Special Projects of National Significance (SPNS), examining models of adolescent HIV, mental health, and substance abuse services. Steven will continue research in these areas and looks forward to working with others in the CIIS community who share these interests.
