The places where the extraction and processing of coal, gas, and oil take place
in the United States are some of the poorest communities in the country. When
addressing green economic development and transitioning to a fossil fuel-free
economy, special attention must be given to communities that have been set up
as sacrifice zones to the fossil fuel industry for decades. This panel will discuss
the effects of fossil fuels on Appalachia and indigenous communities and how a
just transition might be possible for those who are most vulnerable.
