WILL AS TRANSFORMER: POWER AND CONTROL AS COMPENSATIONS

To survive in this new millennium we must understand the relationship of will to power and control and evoke the wisdom of the will or perish. Will expresses in action the choice or determination of our inner authority and purpose. If we believe we have no choice, the state of unawareness, then there is nothing for will to apply itself to. In the course of development, will gets obscured by the personality's attempts to gain security, position, and approval. Power and control become compensations for the accompanying loss of will, tragic mistaken identities. Reclaiming will has specific requirements and brings the gift of freedom. What is will? How and what determines will? What are the tragic consequences of power and control? How do we access will and develop it? This workshop will combine lecture, inner practice, exercises, and panels of exemplars.
003 The Ennead Group: Ilona O'Connor, Ann Dunlap and Robert Dunlap
LEADERSHIP AND TEAMBUILDING PROCESS

The Ennead Group will present their unique process for Leadership and Teambuilding training. They will articulate the principles of combining the Enneagram material with current leadership and teambuilding theory. Examples from their work in the corporate setting will highlight the effectiveness of these tools. Lessons learned from the application of this process will be an important part of the presentation. In addition, there will be an opportunity for all attendees to participate in a process designed to elicit all points of view to bring about creative and inclusive solutions.

RUMI'S SUFI ENNEAGRAM: SPIRITUALITY THROUGH MORAL HEALING

Rumi, the most read poet in America today, describes the Sufi origin of the Enneagram in his famous Mathnawi. Following a 20 minute explanation of the Sufi Enneagram through its geometric symbol, we will break into smaller groups, and through role playing-doubling and other psychodrama techniques-experience Rumi's characters traits as we explore through our own body, heart, mind centers in their spiritual quest to attain wholeness in personal relationships. By the end of the 90 minutes we will understand the vices of the body, heart and mind centers which prevent us from spiritual wholeness and the virtues that can, through Rumi practices, replace the vices.

LEARNING TO LIVE WITH SENSES WIDE OPEN:
AN ENNEAGRAMMER'S GUIDE TO THE THREE CENTERS OF PERCEPTION

The Enneagram system and Applied Somatics teach that there are three primary centers of perception: the belly center, home of sensation; the heart center, home of emotions; and the head center, home of thought. Each center has its own intelligence, language and terrain, each center is influenced by the others, each center can lead or follow, and each center can be forced out of balance by life's bumps and turns. This presentation will be experiential and didactic. We will explore the links between natural instincts: the body to territorial instinct, the heart to bonding response, and the head to fight/flight instinct. This helps us to see the specific patterns of physical and emotional holding and expression that reside in the body, illuminating the distinct mental style, body language and aesthetic sensibility of each of the nine Enneagram types. When we add the somatic process of reeducating our posture, relaxing our muscles, and learning to breathe fully, we actually learn to sense the differences between thinking, sensing and feeling.

ENNEA-JOURNALING,:
WRITING PRACTICE AS A WAY OF STRENGTHENING ATTENTION AND INTENTION

The Ennea-Journaling workshop will give participants an overview of ways that each Enneagram type might use journal keeping and writing practices for personal growth. The majority of the time of this workshop will be spent giving participants an opportunity to experience several different writing exercises that will demonstrate how to use journal keeping and writing practice in working with the Enneagram for spiritual growth.
007 Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson
INTIMACY, CONTACT AND WHOLENESS IN RELATIONSHIPS

We often hear that intimacy with another is only possible to the extent that we are intimate with ourselves. But what does this really mean? In this talk, Don Riso and Russ Hudson will explore ways in which the Enneagram can be used to deepen contact with our inner experience, thereby creating a space in which real relating with others can occur. They will explore how each personality type loses the fundamental ground of connectedness as well as how each type can reawaken to this connection. Don and Russ will discuss the Harmonic Groups, the Instinctual Variants (subtypes), and other related ideas and conclude with an experiential exercise.

THE ENNEAGRAM FROM THE INSIDE: LITERARY EXEMPLARS OF THE NINE TYPES

In The Politics of Experience, R.D. Laing writes: "We can see other people's behavior, but not their experience. This has led some people to insist that psychology has nothing to do with the other person's experience, but only with his behavior."
Great literature offers us opportunities to examine the raw material of experience before it crystallizes into behavior. Skillfully written characters in fiction also allow us to witness the process of an individual's psychological change step by step, as it takes place over the course of the story. Through examining literary examples featuring interior monologue, participants in this workshop will increase their understanding of what it feels like to be each of the nine types. Where her 1999 IEA Conference presentation included nine male literary examples, this presentation offers nine female examples.
009 Clarence Thomson
SINCERITY IS NOT ENOUGH: SPIRITUAL PATHS, DETOURS AND DEAD ENDS

Until one is quite advanced, spiritual development consists in breaking our Enneagram trances. If you are studying spiritual material, either under a teacher or by reading, you are usually studying a tradition that has a fairly clear Enneagram orientation. This workshop will use the Enneagram as a template to identify the Enneagram styles of various traditions, then discuss how the stress and security points function as resources to identify which spiritual traditions will be most helpful for each Enneagram style. Participants will be given excerpts from writings from major traditions and asked to identify what Enneagram style informs it and how this tradition will be positive, negative or neutral in helping specific Enneagram styles.

HOW TO ACCESS THE FULL POTENCY OF YOUR TYPE

This workshop is about accessing your full potency by:
o Deepening your awareness of your own particular gifts, the strengths of your personality
o Learning to recognise the restraining habits of personality like fear, judgment or passivity
o Knowing which center hosts these gifts and these restraints
o Using a grounding method to dissolve blockages and facilitate the flow of energy between
the centers, thus accessing your full potency of type
o This is inner healing, it is about loving and accepting your whole self
Inner healing has its own rhythm, whatever is right for you at this moment in time will happen
if you have the will to give your time, placement of attention and loving energy.
012 Patrick H. O'Leary, M.S., M. Div.
THE ENNEAGRAM OF LEADERSHIP

Political headlines, international news and the business pages of daily newspapers alternately praise and blame persons regarded as leaders. History repeatedly demonstrates the consequences of the correct/incorrect match of person and situation…of personality and challenge. This workshop will explore some of the reasons why a Kennedy becomes a legend and a Nixon becomes a disgrace. It will also investigate how Oprah rules the air and Hillary arouses suspicion. Participants will be invited to experience their own leadership styles through interaction with each other. The Enneagram will be used to explain the dynamics of each leadership style. You will learn:
o The ways you exercise leadership
o How the situation challenges you to lead
o How your response is channeled by personality
o The potential of each leadership style
o Ways to improve your leadership
o Practical tips to help others become better leaders
Knowing how the Enneagram operates in you and others helps explain the art of leadership. Learning to lead better is the challenge of this workshop.

ENNEAGRAM SUBTYPES-INSTINCT AND ARCHETYPE*

Each Enneagram type has three variations depending on which of three instincts is highlighted: self preservation, one-to-one (sexual), or social. These subtypes shape the pathways for our personality in daily life-where and how we invest ourselves in the areas of home and financial security, partnership and romance, friendship and community life. Understanding our subtype is a powerful tool for growth and self awareness (not to mention getting along with those other subtypes!). In this workshop we'll survey the 27 sub-types-both as psychological structures from early childhood and universal human archetypes. We'll break into subtype groups to explore similarities and differences. If you already know your subtype, come and share your experience. If you don't yet know, you may be able to discover it during this workshop. (*2 tape set for $15.00)

UNKNOWING-THE DECONSTRUCTION OF PERSONALITY TYPE

Within the Desert ascetic tradition and Christian neoplatonism there developed a praxis of unknowing leading to the deconstruction of personality types and unity of will between the searcher and God. This presentation will explore the origins of the Enneagram within the Desert ascetic and neoplatonic traditions with special emphasis upon the works of Evagrius of Pontus and Psuedo-Denys the Areopagite, whose influence upon both eastern and western thought and practice is timeless.
016 Julie Foster
POINTS OF TRANSFORMATION-THE GATEWAY TO YOUR HIGHER SELF

This workshop focuses on learning to use the powerful and transformative lessons of the "Security" and "Stress" points. Connection with these two points helps free us from the limiting habits of our type and leads us in the direction of the Higher Aspects: the Virtue and the Holy Idea. These connecting points are in fact essential guides in our evolutionary process. We will experience the transformative aspects of our "Security" and "Stress" points using a "passion" conversion exercise, guided meditation and walking the Enneagram diagram to open the door to the Virtue and Holy Idea of our type.
017 Judith A. Swack, PhD
TRANSFORMING ILLNESS AND ADDICTION IDENTITY STRUCTURES

A person with an illness or addiction identity feels like a foreigner has hijacked, damaged, and taken control of his life. The person struggles mightily to oust the foreigner and regain control. In the workshop, Dr. Swack uses the Essence Process, a quantum energy intervention, to transform the energy of all aspects of this struggle into a single unified energy that serves the being's highest good.
018 Barbera McMenemin, Ph.D.
THE ENNEA WRITE ENCOUNTER

This workshop brings together innovative concepts and theories regarding the Enneagram and handwriting. The foundations of both handwriting and the Enneagram are heavily immersed in symbolism and psychological investigation. Expect to delve into the nature of the three Enneagram centers and the zones of handwriting to explore an intriguing relationship between type, our conscious, subconscious, and unconscious processes through the lense of handwriting. To engage an awareness of the three centers, experiential handwriting movements set to music provide the stimulation for an encounter between handwriting and the Enneagram personality.

THE ENNEAGRAM IN CORPORATE CULTURE

Corporate culture is topical in organizations as they cope with change. Culture refers to unconscious beliefs and values, and is a source of stability and also of resistance to change. Organizations tend to have an Enneagram style that supports the task or reflects the leadership. An organization's Enneagram style is a key to unconscious values, beliefs, and motivations which shape the reaction to change. Enneagram knowledge provides managers and employees with insight into culture and tools to manage it.

THE INTEGRATED ENNEAGRAM FOR PERSONAL GROWTH AND RELATIONSHIP ENHANCEMENT

This workshop will use knowledge and understanding of the Enneagram in combination with various models of humanistic, existential, transpersonal and experiential group psychotherapies, psychodramatic and sociodramatic techniques, and various concepts from philosophy and theology to explore and integrate the head, heart, and gut centers for personal and relational growth and development. Participants will learn ways to self-observe, gain self-knowledge, maintain awareness and develop higher states of consciousness.
023 Thomas Condon
THE DYNAMIC ENNEAGRAM: USING THE ENNEAGRAM TO TRULY GROW AND CHANGE

"The Enneagram is only worth knowing if you do something with it."This workshop provides this presenter's method for using the Enneagram as a tool for change. He will present a short model of change that is adapted to the Enneagram and reflects the approach in his books. He will then work with one or more volunteers from the audience to demonstrate ways to alter Enneagram related problems. Using selected techniques from different psychotherapies (Ericksonian Hypnosis, Brief Therapy and NLP), he presents something like a "tool-set" for personal change-useful practices and ideas that you can adopt to transcend limits, solve problems and enhance the potentials of your personality style. Come and experience some fresh insights and new choices.

THE PROFITABLE PROPHET

We've created the term the 'profitable prophet', an inspired leader or teacher with the ability to forecast and predict based on current circumstances, to define the new role of leadership for the entrepreneur. A core competency for the new leadership role is to create positive change: action that results from inspired perception and business acumen. This unique workshop integrates the wisdom of the Enneagram with practical business competency. You will learn, through presentation, interactive, and self-reflective opportunities, how to advance your natural leadership talents, move past the limits of your point bias, and create an action plan, or prophesy, for your future business success.
025 Malcolm Pearson
THE ENNEAGRAM OF SPIRIT

This workshop is about the journey from Essence (non-duality), which is an aspect of our everyday lives we do not often explore. The nine Holy Ideas are facets of the Divine as they are reflected in the human being. They are the portals through which we enter this world. The path continues through the sacred wound that sets us on the path to duality into the fixation of type. We are cut off from essence in the delusional world of our personality type. We will work with the wounding for each of the types and the ego fixations that form in defense, using the knowledge and experience of the participants.

THE TRIADS PERSONALITY INVENTORY (TPI)-
HOW TO USE THE CENTERS TO ACCESS YOUR ENNEAGRAM TYPE

In the application to education, business and other professions the Triads Personality Inventory (TPI) quickly gives workshop participants verifiable insight into the Enneagram model, providing accessible profiles of the nine types, and establishing for facilitators a firm base from which to teach the complexities and benefits of the model. The TPI was developed by Enneagram teacher and author, Janet Levine (The Enneagram Intelligences, 1999). This workshop includes taking the inventory, reading the descriptors, watching video clips, small group discussion, and Q&A about the Inventories. The TPI series currently includes separate TPI Inventories for Educators, Business Leaders and Salespeople, Students, Ministers and Parents. TPI series, Janet Levine et al c. 1997-2000).

BEYOND CHANCE TRANCE FORMATIONS

Often times we experience meaningful coincidences (synchronicity) at seemingly critical points in our personal development. Such meaningful coincidences can be viewed by individuals as having a profound influence on their lives. Synchronistic events occur in relation to time and space, are geographically specific, and the beyond random character suggests that they are beyond chance. In this workshop, we explore the very specific character development, the very specific issues each Enneagram type encounters, and how these events unfold in time. One goal of this workshop is to develop a concept that we live in an everyday level of consciousness without awareness (like a trance state) of the central difficulties inherent to the personality. This is a repeating pattern which may go on unnoticed until the threshold of the stimuli such as uncanny coincidences described as synchronistic events gain enough intensity to demand attention.
029 Sandra Maitri
THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION OF THE ENNEAGRAM

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to an understanding of the Enneagram as a tool for personal transformation and spiritual realization. The presenter will discuss how it is a map that charts phases and nuances of our disconnection from our essential nature and our development of a personality structure. This understanding, that of the Diamond Approach, provides a perspective on inner work, becoming a guide much like Ariadne's thread to help us wind our way back through the labyrinth of the personality to the spiritual dimensions within.
030 Brian Grodner, Ph.D. ABPP
I ALREADY KNOW MY TYPE, BUT HOW DO I ACTUALLY CHANGE?

Integrating Hypnosis, NLP, Energy Psychology with the wisdom of the Enneagram The Enneagram may be the most profound and practical way to know ourselves and others but it does not have many inherent strategies or techniques for change. And many of the most powerful and innovative psychotherapeutic strategies for change don't have a refined theory of personality or spirituality. This workshop will experientially integrate the power of these change strategies with the wisdom of the Enneagram. We will experience: Ericksonian Hypnosis/NLP to relax, be more present, and access and mobilize general, triadic, and type specific positive resources and attitudes and Energy Psychology to eliminate Enneagramatic fears, limiting beliefs, trauma, stress, and unwanted emotions. Participants will learn effective tools to continue this process on their own with themselves and clients.

LOVE RELATIONSHIPS THAT THRIVE

This workshop explores a new, field-tested paradigm for dealing with age-old dilemmas in love relationships. When used properly, the Enneagram is a superb diagnostic tool which brings clarity in two major ways: 1) uncovering how core-level stalemates and disagreements evolve due to personality differences and 2) how we can develop effective ways to resolve these dilemmas. Success in any given relationship is defined by the inner satisfaction of the two partners. Some may prefer the feeling of sameness and commonality between them with peace and quiet. Others may enjoy the growth, debate and "sparks" that fly from opposing perceptions and needs. Video clips of actual cases from clinical practice will be presented showing how couples come apart fighting, how they come back together, and why they feel their relationships have endured. Audience participation in evaluation of type, instinct (subtype), and relationship prognosis is encouraged.
032 Tom Chow
LAYERS OF THE MIND: APPLYING THE DIRECTION THEORY OF THE ENNEAGRAM

The underlying structure of the Enneagram types is not well understood. This presenter recently proposed that the 9 Enneagram ego compulsions each have a two-layer structure, with a surface compulsion and a deep compulsion. Each layer has a Hornevian structure, leading to a simple theory that explains not only the 9 types, but also most lines of integration. This workshop will first present the major points of the theory, and then proceed to an informal discussion of the implications of this theory for personal growth, as well as for unifying the Enneagram with other psychological systems.

THE ENNEAGRAM COACHING ADVANTAGE

A practical seminar on using the Enneagram to create a coaching advantage to obtain the following results: facilitation of the discovery of nine personal coaching styles and their development; enhancement of the participant's coaching style; suggestions to participants towards improving their coaching styles; the strengths and limitations of each coaching style; insights into coaching behaviors; ten procedures for promoting coaching effectiveness.

THREE CENTERS/FOUR SOULS:
A CABALISTIC MEDITATION ON BALANCE AND PERSONAL INTEGRATION

Cabalistic psychology teaches that our spirits contains three levels of soul which correspond to the Instinctual, Heart and Head centers of the Enneagram. Hovering above these three souls is a fourth level of spirit, which allows us to observe and integrate both the light and shadow sides of the other three. It is only through the recognition and development of the fourth level that we can achieve wholeness and prepare for the ultimate spiritual manifestation, union with Essence. In this workshop we will explore how the four levels of our souls mirror the Four Worlds which Cabalists viewed as the path of descent from limitless Essence of our earthly reality. Special attention will be paid to these worlds as sources of the Holy Ideas and our Fixations, the Virtues, and our Passions and our Instinctual Subtypes. To help us bind our centers to each other amidst the frictions of daily living, we will conclude with a practice based on the Jewish rite of separation and healing, Havdalah.
035 Jerome P. Wagner, Ph.D.
MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH OUR INNER POLARITIES OR THE SHADOW KNOWS

Whenever we over identify with certain aspects of our personality, we tend to disavow our opposite tendencies. For example, if we think of ourselves as right and exact, then we don't want to be around any parts of ourselves that might be wrong or messy. We relegate these parts to the basement or unconscious. This is called repression or splitting. If the basement starts to offend us, we can take one further step and throw our garbage out. This is called projection. For example if we think of ourselves as wise and perceptive, then we cast out our foolishness and find ourselves surrounded by dunces. Defenses create divisions within us and between ourselves and others. Re-owning our unseemly parts leads to inner integration, an increase in energy and wholesome connections with other people. A combination of lecture and dialogue will suggest ways to make friends with our shadow and be more welcoming of our inner exiles. This workshop will explore each Enneagram style's ego identification and its shadow, the defenses against the ego-dystonic parts, and ways of reacquainting us with and reintegrating our disowned characteristics.
036 Betsey Bittlingmaier, Ph.D.
ENNEAGRAM IMPROV

Literature provides us with thousands of examples of dynamic interactions. Good literature gives us ample opportunity to study aspects of the nine personality structures including wings and subtypes. This workshop will utilize drama to explore personality structures. A number of interactions chosen from a range of plays will provide a take-off point for the participants as actors to improvise the balance of the scene. Then there will be discussion of whether the presented dynamics were authentic within the context of the Enneagram. This format should provide an interesting learning experience for us to explore the Enneagram through the texts of a number of playwrights in conjunction with our own insights.

THE ENNEAGRAM OF MUSIC-THE SKY'S THE LIMIT!

This relaxing, entertaining, and interactive workshop knows no boundaries. We will explore the whole Universe of music-from classical to rock to movie music to jazz and beyond-using reasoning for understanding musical concepts, reIating to the music through our feelings, and communicating our various reactions to what we hear. Music contributes to personal wholeness by conveying a Universe of feelings as well as involving the intellect, the body, and the senses. There will be musical guessing games and dance music to express the types, followed by music to heal. The minuet, for example, has the feeling of the careful and proper One personality, while the One's drivenness might be represented by the relentless Tarentella. The scherzo (literally a "joke"), represents the healing Ones can experience at Seven, while the Sarabande has the soulful personal feeling of Ones at Four. Come and find some of the Enneagramatic reasons why your foot starts taping and your body starts swaying when you hear certain music. See if you understand yourself and the Enneagram better by using both sides of your brain.

ER! ENNEAGRAM RESEARCH-A PANEL DISCUSSION

In contrast to the Jerry Maguire client who demanded "Show me the money", Enneagram clients are likely to state "SHOW ME THE DATA." To be accepted into the business academic and therapeutic mainstream, the Enneagram needs empirical support. Is there any? This panel will present designs and results of the research done by these panelists. There will be ample question and answer time and an opportunity for others to share their research.

KABBALA AND THE ENNEAGRAM: AN ANATOMY OF CONSCIOUSNESS

The Kabbalistic tree of life gives us an anatomy of consciousness. Both the Enneagram of fixations and the Enneagram of higher virtues and ideas can be placed on the tree. A number of levels of consciousness in between these two states form a ladder by which one can go from one to the other. We recognize the famous 3 levels of learning (1. extension of behavior repertoire; 2. observation of and disidentification with the mechanisms of one's type; and 3. transformational learning), but there are more in between levels. Every level provides a number of tasks that have to be practiced for development. For every level there are exercises available. We will discuss the relationship between the Enneagram and the tree of life, and practice some exercises from this tradition that will help us go from fixations to higher consciousness.

ENNEAGRAM FOR EDUCATORS: TEACHING AND LEARNING IN AN EXPANDING UNIVERSE

This session will demonstrate materials, activities, and curriculum design or introducing the Enneagram to teachers and students. Teachers who have used the Enneagram in elementary and secondary classes will describe their success in making teaching and learning more productive and whole. Examples of students' responses to learning about the Enneagram will be displayed. Active participation in role playing, skits, and discussion assures involved, engaged learning.
042 Mark Douglas Sumner
EMOTIONS, EMBODIED BEING AND THE ENNEAGRAM

The workshop is presented on the principle that our habitual emotional states become so embodied in our physical being and this increases our predisposition to experiencing these emotions. This principle is explored in relation to the Enneagram's three centers and their predominant emotional issues. Participants will explore how emotional states-especially anxiety, anger and depression-are physically embodied, and how these emotional states can be changed through the use of music and movement.
